There are many kinds of drug addictions, which can be from recreational drugs or prescription drugs such as sleeping tablets or other pills, aswell as the 'everyday' - cigarettes, caffeine, alcohol.

Exactly what is going on for a person with a substance that is causing a problem for them will depend on all the specifics. Some addictions are manageable around jobs while others are not. Some may be affordable while others cause major problems in life leading to cycles it can be very difficult without support to get out of.

Most of what drugs do, the mind can already do - drugs just make the effects stronger or clearer.

So if the aim of a drug is to achieve a trip as just the pure sensations then a lot of music styles might help to replace that. The same would be true for escapism.

A lot of them were created with a festival or club or other tight knit scene in mind so will tend to match experiences pretty well. It might be possible to "create those experiences" with playlists and then just lose self in the flow of the music - but this time - without the extra chemical part that now became a problem

Music on its own will produce some of the same, or similar, natural chemicals in the mind.

Or it might be if take away a drug it shifts the mind into a different gear so then the music needs to shift a bit "the other way" to bring the baseline feeling back around. It could be worth to explore styles not normally listened to or well outside of a comfort zone, as may find a "hook" that is better than the drug.

If a group of friends all listen the same but because of that it's difficult to get out of a scene then one way to define a change in direction could be to change the records to a style that doesn't really go together well with the drug, but, use that to "assert a new you"

Music is a mind altering drug in it's own right...
