Psychotic disorders (PDs) are short or long term conditions involving confusions about the nature of reality. This takes the form of delusions (complicated beliefs or theories about the world that are not true). Schizophrenia is a deeply affecting form of psychotic disorder, lasting for more than 6 months, with confusing episodes for the mind, where there can be imaginary voices or images perceived like in a dream, as well as delusions, similar to if a person was living in a novel they were writing (perhaps a spy novel, or something like that). Another similarity with night-time dreams is that thoughts may seem to be in fragments, with speech being quite brief or repetitive - a bit like someone talking in their sleep, in fact.

One of the differences between psychotic disorders in general and schizophrenia is that schizophrenia is often associated with emotional withdrawal. Psychotic disorders can lead to creative thought if they are managed: It's easy to see the world just one way: It's more inventive to look at it in many different ways. So some of the mind style could lead to a liking to explore round the musical world, or to explore art, or crafts, or writing.
There might be a fine line between being overimaginative and having a psychotic disorder. The mind naturally makes patterns out of the information it is receiving. Sometimes we can build too many connections and become confused in our theory building about the world. Psychosis just means these things have become confused in some way, leading to beliefs that are not real.
