Tinnitus
Tinnitus is caused by a problem in the inner or middle ear, or less often the auditory nerve system, leading to the perception of a sound on and off or it can be constantly, which is not due to any actual sounds in the area around you. It can be a ring, a hum, a buzz, a whir, and at various pitches, and can be noticed more or less clearly depending on other sounds going on. For some people it is very intrusive. For many, the brain "adapts" to the fact it is always there and stops
delivering the perception
to your mind, so you become less and less aware of it, or for some, forget about it all together unless reminded of it again.
It can be especially unsettling in the beginning.
