Thrill & Novelty Seeking

Thrill & Novelty Seeking

There's nothing wrong with enjoying a buzz from time to time (why else are there Theme Parks, Skydiving, Action and Thriller films at the cinema, etc). The problem is if the "buzz" ends up leading to accidents, ill health, bad decisions in life, or to addictions, or to doing something really reckless. in addition, if too big of a part of a mind style, thrill or novelty seeking, can make it difficult to settle on any one thing, as, there always seems to need to be some new things needed.

It can make it difficult to have lasting jobs or lasting relationships or lasting social groups. You might end up quite isolated, eventually, or in financial difficulties, and, then unfortunately, with very few options to "get out and enjoy life" even to a normal level, never mind finding a buzz or new things to do. It's also, unfortunately, probably only obvious from experience afterwards, what were the things that made life more fun and what were the things which a person ends up regretting.

Some buzz or novelty seeking is due to chemicals in the brain such as serotonin or dopamine levels, so if dopamine is low, leading to a low or anxious mood, you might seek out more experiences to create a more enjoyable feeling. But as more and more of a given hit is taken, the amount of dopamine produced in the brain reduces over time, so people tend to need to consume more of their hits to get the same buzzes.

This can lead to many dangers in the end.

A lot of electronica and rock styles aims to create a buzz or a thrill feeling - many of the fast tempo ones from House to Trance to Techno to Rave etc or Rock genres with a massive dramatic feel including Stadium or some of the Heavy Metal styles.

One thing is probably true. You might associate all those genres with a given scene, group, possibly recreational drugs going along with it and so on. Which might someday have become a problem. But in reality: The music is good anyway. It's good just on headphones. Probably about 90% of the atmosphere is due to the music being great to set the tone of everything else.

You might very well find you could switch from "thrill tripper" to "music connoisseur" quite easily. There are endless, endless styles to get absorbed in. The list never ever runs out so there will always be more new things to find! Start browsing YouTube or Spotify obscure corners in earnest, then get down a record shop! Enthusiasm is a great thing to have - don't let it be the reason for running into major difficulties in life though!

If you have naturally very high serotonin then it might also seem like only the really fast hyper or extra intense stuff with a mad pulsing rhythm is going to do the trick, but actually, sticking on something that is the complete opposite to that, such as eg acoustic guitar solo, can catch the mind quite unawares and offer a very relaxing and perhaps much needed time out from any kind of hype or stress.
Music style ideas for Thrill & Novelty Seeking
Electronica is filled with new sound sensations - check out all the electronica genres, there are a huge number to choose from. This can provide stimulations like a drug but without the chemicals.
I find very warm music like country n western or caribbean styles with a good sense of heart is good to reconnect with emotions and avoid seeking thrills.
