UK has a great Hip-Hop scene right now. London of course, but various collectives scattered all over - South coast, Bristol, Midlands, Manchester, L'pool, Scotland, ...
UK GRIME. 2000s - 2010s.
A hard rap genre London born using the production techniques from DubStep (as Dubstep used 2 be, that is), Drum n Bass & UKG. In it's purist form it's pretty underground, and that's kind of the point. But quite a few cross-over acts have hit the mainstream now, tho, probably best loved when at its most challenging.
US and WORLD HIP-HOP. 2000s - 2010s.
Just a pretty random sample of post-millenium US artists, Kendrik, Kanye, etc.
TRAP CLUB. 2000s - 2010s.
Similar to Southern Hip-Hop in lyrical style and sound, but towards a 3-to-the-beat hi hat in place of a 2-to-the-beat. Can be produced as pure dance tracks too.
SOUTHERN HIP-HOP. 2000s - 2010s.
East and West coast was the original 2 lines in US rap of course. Southern rappers felt cut out so kicked off their own style in the early 2000s. Associated to kind of slower lyrics and minor key .
"POP RAP". 1980s - 2010s.
Basically just very 'mainstream' rap. More about a good tune than communicating a deeper, more soulful, or darker message.
HIP-HIP GOLDEN AGE. Late 1980s - 1990s.
Late 80s - 90s was a period of huge variety of styles for rap, similar to rock in the 60s - 70s and electronica in the 80s - 90s. Much of the all time classics dates from this same time.
HIP HOUSE. 1980s - 2010s
House music with an M.C. very popular in early 1990s clubs. There's still a lot of major hits out this genre still though. I didn't even notice that until exploring the genre.
MIAMI BASS. 1980s
Just a nod to this amazingly classically 80s & therefore never to be repeated Miami take on rap.
CLASSIC BREAKS. 1980s
Hip-Hop culture proper. Lots of MC'ing, turn-tablism, breakdancing. These are the street art and music movements from which it all started, and would be considered to have created the world of rap.
